Cup for Human Rights
Date: Saturday, 17. September 2022 (10AM-07PM)
Location: STAW Platz, Rustenschacherallee 3-5 (Prater), 1020 Vienna
With the controversial FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar right ahead of us, we are organizing an alternative World Cup in Vienna. We namely invite groups and people who are directly affected and harmed by the World Cup to play football, cricket and Mamanet-Cachibol. Instead of exploitation and human rights violations, this event is all about global justice, anti-discrimination and sustainability.
Activities
- Midi-football tournament
8 Teams of 7 Players each (6 +1). Each team should consist of male and female players.
- Cricket-tournament
Max. 4 Teams
- Mamanet-Cachibol try-out station
We namely invite women* to spontaneously join us for a round of Cachibol –an internationally recognized sport. The rules of the game are based on those of volleyball, with the main difference being that the ball is caught before passing it to the next player or over the net.
What kind of teams can participate?
This event intends to bring together teams of those communities, which work on the World Cup constructions sites, in Qatari households, as well as those being discriminated or whose right to freedom of speech/press are being oppressed.
We therefore invite teams that identify themselves as a part of the following groups to contact fairplay:
1) Diaspora communities in Austria who are exploited by labor migration (on construction sites or in households) in Qatar. The largest migrant groups in Qatar come from India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Egypt, Philippines, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Syria & Afghanistan
2) LGBTIQ+ people and women
3) Organizations defending freedom of press and freedom of speech
This event should not be perceived as a competition but rather as an occasion to focus on values such as solidarity and fair play. Therefore, the team that best represents the idea of human rights will be rewarded with a “Human Rights Cup”.
Additionally, there will be a DJ and some extra entertainment for visitors (incl. childcare).
Registration
The Human Rights Cup is an invitational tournament! Interested teams can register by sending us information on their teams via E-Mail until August 29th. We will decide who will by invited shortly after. The participation is for free.
