We attended the Sporting Chance Forum 2023, hosted by the Center for Sports And Human Rights (CSHR), where we spent two days listening to important discussions on the future shape of sport.
Discussions within the agenda covered key topics such as transforming sports cultures beyond mere obligations, adapting to changing frameworks and integrating young journalists into sports reporting. Experts such as Kat Craig and Miles Benjamin also shed light on dealing with cases of abuse and creating safe sporting environments.
A standout moment was the discussion on discrimination and colonial (legacy) burdens in sport with journalist Stan Grant, Marjorie Guillaume, who sits in the French Ministry of Sport, the President of the Caribbean Olympic Committee Keith Joseph and athlete and activist Azeem Rafiq. The discussions reflected on the historical roots of the sports landscape and emphasized the importance of equity and inclusion for sustainable development. Another highlight was the participation of Caster Semenya, a South African middle-distance runner and multiple Olympic and world champion, who is fighting against the ban on female athletes with different gender development and elevated testosterone levels.
For all those who missed this year’s forum, there is a chance to listen to a live recording of the discussions: https://www.sporthumanrights.org/events/sporting-chance-forum-2023/
